Sun gives away enterprise software to challenge Microsoft

IN another unprecedented move, Sun Microsystems Inc. announced on Thursday that it is giving away its enterprise software to go after Microsoft Corp.
Calling it the "only complete enterprise-class open alternative to Microsoft," Jonathan Schwartz, Sun President and Chief Operating Officer, said its experience with giving away the Solaris 10 operating system for free has inspired them to do the same for its enterprise software.

Reiterating that "open source is the future" of the software industry, and that "volume wins, every time," Schwartz stressed that Sun is bent on becoming the preferred software platform to run the next-generation Internet.

Sun is giving away the Java Enterprise System, Sun N1 Management software, and Sun developer tools, hoping to lure more developers and chief executive officers worldwide to use and deploy its enterprise software.

The catch is that Sun will extend no support or warranty to the free enterprise software that can be downloaded from its website.

In a teleconference held in Sun's Philippine subsidiary, the vice president of Sun Microsystem's software group Tom Goguen said this aggressive strategy is just one of several "radical
steps" the company is taking in the next few weeks.

He hinted that Sun will also announce radical strategies for its hardware products.

"It is the companies that innovate that succeed. We will introduce more radical products and models, going forward. In the next few weeks, we will also rock the hardware world," he added, declining to comment on how this move will affect Sun's bottom line.

Goguen said Sun Microsystems is coming up as well with new services to augment its overall revenues.

Sun has nearly a million active subscribers to its Java Enterprise System. It estimates that there are now about 4.5 million Java developers worldwide.

So will this radical strategy help Sun topple Microsoft?

Schwartz believes that giving away its enterprise software, and embracing the open source philosophy will lure more developers and customers to its side. He hopes to do this at the expense of rival Microsoft.

From a fading star, Schwartz said, Sun will become the software industry's "rock star."
